Project Benefits:

  • Create a comfortable environment for people of all ages and abilities who are walking, biking, and rolling along San Bruno Avenue and crossing over the U.S. 101 interchange.
  • Create safer crossings across U.S. 101 and close a key trail gap by connecting to the San Francisco Bay Trail and the Centennial Trail.
  • Provide a connection to the San Bruno Caltrain station.
  • Incorporate improvements from the approved SamTrans Bus Stop Improvement Plan.

Design Options

  • Option 1

    Proposes a combination of Class II, Class IV, and shared-use paths with plastic posts to separate bikes (or cyclists) from vehicle traffic.

    • Two-way Class IV bikeway on the (West side of U.S. 101)
    • Shared-use path on one side of the U.S. 101 overcrossing.
    • Curbside Class IV and Class II bike lanes (East of U.S. 101)
    • New bike and traffic signals at 8 intersections
    • Raised pedestrian crossings at on and off ramps
    • Potential lower cost than Option 2
    • Potential shorter timeline to implement over Option 2
  • Option 2

    Proposes a shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists with a landscaped buffer strip and raised curb to separate cyclists from vehicle traffic.

    • Shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists
    • New bike and traffic signal at 8th Ave. only (The shared-use path is separated from vehicle traffic, and does not require additional bicycle signals)
    • Raised pedestrian crossings at on and off ramps
    • Potential higher cost than Option 1
    • Potential longer timeline to implement than Option 1
